August Sun: Why Heat and UV Peak Weeks Apart

Mid-August feels like the deep end of summer. The sea is at its warmest, the ground radiates heat well past sunset, and the whole month reads as peak sun. The sun itself disagrees. On 11 August it climbs to the same midday height it had on 2 May — a date most people associate with jackets, not sunburn. Heat and UV are not in step, and the gap between them is where a lot of late-summer burns come from.

Why does August feel like peak sun when it isn’t?

Because heat lags light. The National Weather Service describes it plainly: “the warmest part of the summer lags the summer solstice,” and in northern Ohio the hottest daily temperatures land “nearly 3 weeks later in mid-July” (NWS Cleveland, “The Seasons, the Equinox, and the Solstices”). The delay exists because ground and water need time to absorb heat.

It’s the same reason the hottest hour of the day is mid-afternoon rather than noon. The sun is highest at midday, but the surface keeps gaining more heat than it loses for hours afterwards. Stretch that from hours to weeks and you get the summer version.

Here’s the part that matters for skin. Nearly everyone uses heat as a proxy for sun strength — you step outside, feel the temperature, and calibrate from that. But heat is a lagging indicator of the thing that actually burns you. By the time a summer feels its strongest, the sun driving it has already been fading for weeks.

What actually sets the UV index?

Four things, and temperature isn’t one of them. The EPA lists sun angle — a function of “latitude, day of year, and time of day” — along with altitude, cloud cover and stratospheric ozone (US EPA, “Learn About the UV Index”). Altitude alone adds about 6% more UV per kilometre above sea level.

That omission is the whole story. Air temperature depends on wind, humidity, cloud and what the ground has been absorbing for weeks. UV depends on geometry and atmosphere. The two often move together in summer, which is exactly why the times they come apart catch people out.

Is the August sun actually weaker?

Yes, but less than the calendar suggests, and it drops off fast from here. On 11 August the sun’s declination is +15.1° — identical to 2 May. Midday sun right now is as high as it was in the first days of May, and by late September it will have fallen to the equinox.

That symmetry is worth sitting with. Most people treat early May as a “put sunscreen on” time of year and late August as the tail end of a season they’ve already adapted to. The sun makes no such distinction — those two dates are geometrically the same. What differs is only how warm the air happens to be, and how much attention you’re paying.

The asymmetry is in behaviour, not astronomy. In May people are pale, cautious and freshly reminded about sunscreen. In August they’re tanned, relaxed, and several weeks into treating the sun as background. Same sun angle, opposite level of care — and that’s the part SunDose is built to interrupt.

Does cloud cover let you off?

Mostly not. The EPA puts UV transmission at 89% under scattered cloud and 73% under broken cloud; only fully overcast skies bring it down to 31% (US EPA, “Learn About the UV Index”). A bright-but-hazy August afternoon is close to a clear one as far as your skin is concerned.

Cloud also messes with the heat cue specifically. Cloud cover drops the temperature far more than it drops the UV, so an overcast-but-muggy day feels mild while still carrying most of its ultraviolet. That’s the mismatch in its purest form.

The two moments this catches people out

Late summer and spring — the two shoulders of the curve, for opposite reasons.

Right now, in mid-August, the risk is complacency. The season feels established, the burn from June has faded into a tan, and the sun is quietly on its way down but still well above the WHO’s protection threshold of UV Index 3 (WHO, “Radiation: The ultraviolet (UV) index”). Nothing about the day announces that it needs attention.

In spring the error runs the other way. April and May are cold enough to feel harmless while the sun is already climbing back to August strength. That’s the classic first-warm-weekend burn — people who’d never sit out unprotected in August do exactly that in May, because 17°C doesn’t feel like a threat.

Both mistakes have the same root: using a thermometer to answer a question about geometry.

How do you read the day instead of the thermometer?

Check the number, not the weather. The WHO advises sun-protection measures from UV Index 3 upward, and that threshold has nothing to do with how the day feels. Three habits that survive the seasonal mismatch:

  • Look at the index before you plan the day, not after you’re already out. The hourly view shows where the peak sits — usually a narrower window than people expect.
  • Treat cloud as a small discount, not a pass. Under broken cloud you still have roughly three-quarters of the UV.
  • Watch the shoulders of the season. Mid-August and early May are the same sun. If you’d protect yourself on one, protect yourself on the other.

We noticed this pattern in our own use before we could explain it. The days people forgot to start a session weren’t the scorching ones — those are obvious. They were the pleasant ones: 24°C, a bit of breeze, some high cloud. Comfortable enough that nothing prompts you to check, and that’s exactly when the number is worth a glance.
